Cant Get Decimal to Show Up!

Hey...I've been cracking head about this one all day, and I'm sure it's
an easy answer, but here goes:

I have a column entitled Sequ which is defined as a Decimal with
Precision 10 and Scale 5. In an ASP.NET page, I'm performing a
calculation which is inserted into the Sequ column. I'm doing a
response.write, which enables me to see that the numbers are in fact
being calculated correctly complete with a string of numbers after the
decimal, but when I pull the numbers out to use on the page or access
the table, Sequ lists all numbers as integers. I'm using a stored
procedure in which I'm declaring the @.calc parameter (the calculated
value which is being inserted) as a Decimal -- I don't know what I'm
doing wrong. Help appreciated...thanks.

Hi Erik,

Like this

DECLARE @.calc decimal (10,5)

or like this

DECLARE @.calc decimal

In the latter case, you've declared the variable with default scale (18)
and default precision (0).

In the former case, there must be something else wrong. It might help if
you post the complete code for the stored procedure.

Thanks for the help -- I ended up trying "smallmoney" while awaiting a
response, which did the trick quite nicely (I don't need more than four
decimal places); are there any drawbacks to that? I think the issue
was that I had not specifically declared the precision of the decimal,
thinking it would be taken care of already since I had already declared
it in the table design.

Hi Erik,

The value will be implicitly ocnverted from decimal (10,5) to smallmoney.
You'll lose the fifth decimal, as smallmoney and money have a precision of
four decimal places. The maximum for smallmoney is over 200,000, so you
won't have problems with that. The conversion will have a very small
effect on performance. If the parameter is used in a WHERE clause and
compared to a decimal column, the parameter will be converted back.

The main drawback is that you'll fail to understand the logic when you
have to get back to the code, several months from now.

If you declare a variable, SQL Server can't know if you'll use it to store
values from a column, let alone know for which column. So SQL Server will
just use the defaults if you don't specify precision.

Can't find rsactivate.exe

I've spent a few hours bashing my head into the wall - no matter what I install and uninstall, I can't seem to get setup to put the rsactivate.exe file into my sql server 2005 installation. Without this tool, I can't get sql reporting working. Can anyone tell me step by step what I need to do to get this tool installed?

Thanks!

rsactivate.exe does no longer exist and is no longer needed in RS 2005.

There is a new graphical configuration tool (Reporting Services Configuration Tool) and you can use rsconfig.exe / rskeymgmt.exe to configure the report server.

Thanks - now that I know that I managed to get my server set up, but the ReportServer virtual directory still returns this error:

Reporting Services Error

The report server has encountered a configuration error. See the report server log files for more information. (rsServerConfigurationError)|||

Most likely the account that is configured to run the RS Web service (typcially Network Service) does not have any file system permissions to access the installation directory and consequently cannot access the configuration file.

In general, setup would set the ACLs correctly on those folders. However, you mentioned that you ran through multiple install/uninstall cycles, so something with the ACLs may be messed up.

One approach you should try is to start the RS configuration tool, go the web service account and (re-)apply the account settings.

Looks like it was a conflict with sharepoint services. I found a KB article on this, and now everything seems to be resolved. I also found that I needed to run rskeymgmt -d to clear our the previously created keys before I could proceed.

Thanks for the help!

I have problems also with Reporting Server SQL 2005 reinstallation. I am using the configurer and have restarted the installation many times, deleting each time the bases and web sites.

When I start the navigator to reach http://localhost/report server, I receive the message that the access to the file intepub/wwwroot/web.config is refused

there no reason that this file be accedded for Report Server and I dont'know what to do to find a solution

Thanks to reply if you have any idea

Can't create new SSIS package in VS 05

Is there anyone out there that can help me - please! I'm about to put my head through a wall.

I used to be able to create SSIS packages in VS 05. It's been a while since I've done it, but when I went in the other day, it would let me - all I can do is get errors. It tells me an "error prevented the view from loading" when it opens in control flow (blank packages and ones I created before all this started) and I get this error :

"Class not registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG)) (System.Windows.Forms)"

If I go over to the Data Flow tab and there are no errors until I click "Click here to add a new Data Flow task", then I get this :

"Object reference not set to an instance of an object. (Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.Design)"

So... here's what I've tried.

Uninstalled and reinstalled VS 05 and SP1 (this was before I realized the problem was with SQL).

Uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2003 Web Tools.

Made sure all the MSXMLs were registered.

Uninstalled and reinstalled all SQL Servers and Tools/Components.

Made sure all SQL Services were running under Local Account

Made sure Integrated Services service was running.

Applied all SQL patches.

I cannot get this to work and I need to be able to create packages. The only other step I can think of is wiping my computer and I don't want to have to do that.

Please please can anyone help me? I've been scouring the internet and working on this for 1 day and 1/2.

Miraculously - it's started working again. All I've done since then is go to the MS Update website and tried to add SQL 2005 SP2 again. It failed again, but this time when I opened my SSIS project, it opened ok.

I also just realized that I disabled the antivirus on my computer in an attempt to upgrade to SP2 again (although I haven't tried to upgrade the second time), but the antivirus is still off - When I reboot, I'll try to open it again - of it fails it must be the antivirus.

|||

Well, it wasn't the antivirus, because I've rebooted and it's still working - with the antivirus running. So if anyone else is running into this issue and is reading this thread for help - sorry - don't know what to tell you or how it fixed itself.

All I know is - you live by Microsoft, you die by Microsoft.
