Can't find AdventureWorks in order to connect

I am working with SQL Server 2005 Express installed on my workstation under
XP SP2.
I am trying to work through the online tutorial. I am on
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms170681.aspx
I downloaded the AdventureWorksDB.msi and installed it. The files
AdventureWorks_Data and AdventureWorks_Log are in my C:\Program
File\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data directory.
I am now trying to register the AdventureWorks server. Everything looks as
described in the tutorial until I get to the Connection Properties in Step 5.
There are no options for me to select. There are no databases other than
the initial system databases (no User Databases) when I try to browse.
Did I do something wrong? How do I locate the database so I can register it?Ensure you attached the AdventureWorks database to your SQL Server instance
which you choose in the New Server Registration window as the Server Name
editbox (e.g. EKREM-PC\test2)
If the AdventureWorks database is attached to your SQL Server instance and
if you type this SQL Server instance' s name in the Server Name editbox in
the New Server Registration, then you should be seeing the AdventureWorks
database in the combobox in Connection Properties tab in the New Server
Registration window.

Cant delete or add a user....

SQL 7
Have a user: John
Restored a backup database, of which John is aliased to the dbo
However, cannot connect as John to this database.
Tried to drop and recreate him, but it does not work, he is sort of
ghosting..
Is in Roles, Public as \John (I have NO idea what that \ means, but it
seems to be the problem)
sp_droprole 'John' or '\John' - says John doesnt exist
sp_dropuser 'John' or '\John' - says John doesnt exit
sp_addalias or sp_adduser says - cant add john, already exists as user or
role in the database !
I deleted the LOGIN and recreated, then went to the databsae sp_addalias
'John','dbo' - said it worked, but still cannot login as John and connect to
this database.
BTW: User must be 'John' as is built into the application .
Anyone 'Try this in TSQ
Use 'YourDatabase
sp_change_users_login 'auto_fix', 'YourLoginUser
This is a classic example of a broken login after restoring a backup from one machine to another. Logins have the SID of the machine they created on|||Thanks Kelly,
I have used this , many times, in the past, but its not working on this one
(number of orphaned users: 0, number fix: 0)
It seems to have something to do with the \ in front of the user name, and I
dont know what that means...cuz I can do this for OTHER users and it works
no problem...

Can't debug proc after Sp2 on WinXP

Hi,
After installation of SP2 on my WinXP Prof I can't run debug in SQL Query
Analyzer.
Unable to connect to debugger on "SERVER" (Error = 0x800706ba). Ensure that
client-side components, such as SQLDBREG.EXE, are installed and registered on
"MYXP". Debugging disabled for connection nn.
Server is Win 2003 and SQL 2000 with Sp3
Before Sp2 everything was OK.
Thanks for the help.

Can't Create and Connect to a new Database (.mdf file)

Unfortunately I was sent to this product by my Hosting Site since all I was trying to do was Create and Manage a User Login with authentication to my subsites in MS Frontpage. (rant: Why doesn't Frontpage support this technology?)

Anyway, I have now spent (wasted?) 8 hours downloading, installing, and tyring to configure SQL Express along with MS Visual Web Developer Express for ASP.NET 2.0 ... For the life of me I can't find detailed configuration informatin and setup information to build a SIMPLE database to connect to the VW product. Folk: this HAS to be simpler to do than what you present in the product! This is way too difficult to deal with compare with frontpage.

Is there a simple "how to" link someplace that is specific enough to preclude me from uninstalling this entire suite ?

Hi Cody,

Sounds like you've already put some effort into this, so I really hate to redirect you again, but I believe it will be worth your while to go over and check out ASP.net web. This site is all about web development using ASP.NET and Visual Web Developer. You will find a number of resources on the site which I think should help you. Of particular interest, I think, will be the How Do I video series and the ASP.NET 2.0 Quickstart tutorials. Both of these are available from the Learn tab if the links above don't work and contain samples about handling logins.

Hope this gets you moving in the right direction.

cant connect xp pro sp2 to database on ntserver 4

We have a program using sqlserver7, bde 5.01, msde, which works fine on the
98se machines we have connecting to ntserver4, however we got a new xp pro
machine with sp2, I have mapped the exe to the network and it goes to a login
screen, where it then fails to connect to the database with a generic cannot
connect to database error. I have turned the firewall in xp off to see if
that helps, I have also included the exe and the instance of sql server on
the list of exceptions
in the firewall
any ideas what I'm missing?
managed to fix the problem ourselves, looked in the registry settings for
borland, turns out the config file was looking at the server but the dll was
looking locally, so we repointed the dll to the server borland folder and hey
presto program connects and works fine
another side point, I was able to export the borland registry key from a
98se machine into the xp pro machine to enable quick setup of borland on xp

Can't connect with Upgrade Advisor

I'm having trouble connecting the Upgrade Advisor to a SQL 2000 box at a client. Here's the setup:

1> I'm running UA on a Virtual PC image

2> I can run UA against other SQL machines on the same domain

3> I can register and administer the SQL server I'm having trouble with in Enterprise Manager

4> I have SA rights on the SQL box I'm having trouble with.

5> The problem is when entering the server name and clicking "detect," it errors out with "The network path not found (mscorlib)."

6> I've tried server name, FQDN and IP address.

This is a fairly convoluted layout, so there could be a firewall issue that I'm not aware of (but I don't think so).

Any help would be appreciated!

Bob

Bob, have you tried running UA directly on the target server? It shouldn't be a problem unless the OS level on the server doesn't support UA.|||

Hey, Allen. Thanks for the feedback...as we discussed Thursday (but I mention here in case anyone else is interested), I don't want to add the .Net Framework to the server at this point.

Can't Connect with Remote Sql server.

Hello All ,

I had installed Sql Server 2000 on Windows server 2003 enterprize Edition. But when I Try to connect it with Remote, 'Sql Server doesn't exists' message appears..

anybody know what may be the reason?

Moving this thread to the SQL Server forums.|||

By default, SQL Server 2005 does not allows remote connections. To configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remote connections, complete all the following steps:

1.Select the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool from the Configuration Tools and then click Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections option. expand Database Engine, click Remote Connections, click Local and remote connections, click the appropriate protocol to enable for your environment, and then click Apply and Ok for restarting the Database engine service.

2. Try adding sqlservr.exe (present in \MSSQL\Binn directory for the default instance and \MSSQL$instance_name\Binn directory for the named instance) in the list of allowed firewall exceptions on the Windows 2003 box.

Rajesh

My question was slightly wrong..

I want to connect with sqlserver 2000 with Ip address.

-my installments are

1. Microsoft Windows Xp or window 2003 server

2 Sql Server 2000

and just want to do to connect with ip address.

I can connect to sqlserver with ip in windows2000

|||

You can connect using IP Address without any problem and for that ensure to add an entry on the client network utility on your client's machine.

can't connect with OLEDB, but ODBC works

I have a local database that I'm having trouble selecting as a source in
DTS. I can connect just fine using "mymachinename", but if I try to use
(local) or an alias in Client Network Utility, I get the error:
Error Source : Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Error Description : [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]
SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
I noticed that if I changed the driver to ODBC, then it works fine. Also, I
can connect using any name in Query Analyzer. However, I need to use OLEDB
and also the alias. I have Windows XP Pro and SQL 2000 Developer Edition w/
SP3. Here's all the different tests I have done with OLEDB:
Server Authentication Result
-- -- --
mymachinename Windows OK
mymachinename SQL login OK
myalias Windows SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
myalias SQL login SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
(local) Windows SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
(local) SQL login SQL Server does not exist or access denied. Can you make an OLE DB connection through a UDL? To create a UDL, just
right-click on your desktop and choose to create a new document. Name it
anything you want. Then rename the extension to .udl. Then double-click on
it. Choose your driver and other connection properties and test it. If it
works from there then most likely OLE DB is fine.
(local) is using shared memory and an alias is using whatever protocol is
defined in cliconfg.exe for that alias. When you get a successful
connection which protocol are you using? For a successful connection you
can do:
SELECT network_library, * from master..sysprocesses where spid = @.@.spid to
see your actual protocol.
It may be that the difference isn't odbc vs. ole db but rather tcp vs.
shared memory vs. named pipes. To force connectivity with each type of
protocol:
for tcp use: tcp:mymachinename
for named pipes use: np:mymachinename
for shared memory use: lpc: mymachinename

Can't Connect with EM

When tring to connect to a remote sql server through EM, I get the following
error message: "SQL Server does not exist or access denied[]ConnectionOpen"
How can I resolve this? Any help is appriciated.
New SQL Server DBA
I believe this would be because the account you are using to access the
Remote SQL Server is not valid, or you do not have the correct password.
Register the server in EM with a valid account and password. A local
administrator account on the Remote SQL Server server has access to SQL
Server. If you are added to the Local Administrators Group, then register
the server in EM using Windows Authentication...Ibelieve this will get you
going.

This message means that for some reason you cannot reach SQL Server. (Thus
not as NetByTelDBA suggested that your account is not valid.) There are
a number of possible reasons for this. The SQL Server could be down. The
server name you are trying to use does not resolve. You have no connection
to that network. Or you have no permission to that network.
