can't get in anymore

I installed SQL 2005 on a new machine last week. Created a database using
scripts. Worked fine for a few days.
Yesterday, I attached a database that had been created on another machine,
with SQL 2000. Seemed to work fine. I closed SQL Server to work on something
else, then opened it back up. It won't let me in now. It says that it
doesn't allow remote connections, even though I am doing it from the same
machine that it resides on.

I tried changing the way I log in, including Windows Authentication, SQL
Server authentication, using my network name, and then using the user name I
created just for this thing when I installed SQL Server. I alwasy get the
same message. I also tried connecting remotely from another machine.
I was able to use this same machine to connect to another SQL Server
instance on the network, so it's apparent that the installation of SQL
Server isn't messed up.
I know that I will probably get asked about an admin username and password,
but I don't know what mine is. I tried sa with no password, but it didn't
work.
This is really causing some problems and I have something due at noon today.
Any help appreciated.
If I uninstalled SQL Server and re-install, will that let me in then?

Can't find SSIS ?

I have VS2005 and have been using SQL 2000. I installed SQL 2005 Developer but I can't find SSIS anywhere. It is hard to start even the first tutorial if I can't find the program. Was it supposed to be installed with 2005 Developer? Help!

Did you select to install Integration Services and the development environment. If you did, the best way to Start to is to open the Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) - find it under your SQL Server group on the Start menu. See http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms173767.aspx

Start a new Integration Services project ... http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms141823(sql.90).aspx

If you do not have BIDS installed then you most likely did not install dev tools.

Did you select SSIS during the install? Note that installing SSIS does not enable you to build packages, only run them.

The SSIS development tool (i.e. BIDS) is installed when you select the "Client Tools" option.

Cant find SQL Server Management Studio

I can't find theSQL Server Management Studio anywhere. I've installed SQL server 2005 developer edition and choosed every component from the list but it isn't in the start->program->SQL server 2005 menu, there's only a couple of configuration managers.

Where can I find it, or am I missing something?

Copy all the files to your hard drive and rerun setup and choose repair to select all components management studio is under management tools. And I don't know what the configuration managers do but they are not related to management studio. Hope this helps.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. I have installed the SQL Native Client for
XP. However, when I try to add a new data source through ODBC Connection
Manager, SQL Native Client is not listed as an option. I have followed this
procedure on three other systems with no problems. What would be causing the
SQL Native Client to not show up in the list of available ODBC data sources?MDAC issues, related DLL conflicts. The ODBC Data Source
Administrator piece can get hosed out with DLL conflicts on

Cant find SMSS

After installing the evaluation edition of MSSQL Enterprise 2005 I can not find SSMS. I know I installed the client tools upon installation. It's not showing up on in the menu, where is the location for the executable file.

Is SSMS even distriubted with the evaluation edition?

If not, is it possible to download it from somwhere...

Did you get any warnings while setup cheked your computer configuration?

Did you specify client tools installation during setup?

SSMS is part of the evaluation edition. To see a report of what's installed go to Add/Remove Programs, select the entry for "Microsoft SQL Server 2005", select "Change", then select "Report". Under "Common Components" you'll want to see something like this:

Workstation Components
[Version: 9.00.1399.06 Edition: Evaluation Edition Patch level: 9.00.1399.06 Language: English (United States)]

If you see this and still don't think you have SSMS installed, close the report. On the "Change" dialog you should see an entry for Workstation Components, select it and press "Next". This will launch the component in maintenance mode. Just follow the dialogs. When you get to the feature tree be sure to select Management Tools under the Client Components node.

SSMS is installed to %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\sqlwb.exe

Can't find server

I installed the old MSDE 2000 (not release a) on a Windows XP Pro machine. I
manage the DB with the MSDE Manager from Vale Software. On the machine it
self, it works fine. I can select the DB and connect as 'sa' with password.
But on every other machine in the network, I can't connect to the DB. I can
ping to the server, that's no problem. I can chose the server in MSDE
Manager (and other DB-Tools like 'Aqua Data Studio' and 'DBVisualizer') but
I always get an error message like 'Cannot find server'. On the XP machine
there is no firewall running and -of course- the SQL-Server task is started.
The port 1433 isn't blocked.
Have enyone an idea why I can connect the DB on the machine it self but not
from every other machine in the network?

It's possible that the server does not have the network connectivity library
enabled.
i don't know how re-enable it in MSDE after MSDE is already installed.
Although i know it can be done, i read it a few days ago in the MSDE2000A
readme.
If it were SQL server, i'd say use the "Server Network Utility" (i think
it's called that). In that you can enable/disable tcpip,netbios,
multiprotocol, flatulance, etc.

|||If you run svrnetcn.exe from the /Program Files/Microsoft SQL
Server/80/Tools/BINN folder it will bring up the Server network utility, you
can make sure the network libraries are enabled.

But now I have a different issue. How can I connect to the MSDE
instance with DBVisualizer? I tried to create a connection but when I
try to select / edit a Driver the drop down is empty and I cannot get
one from the list that I get by hitting the Edit button.

I think I've installed all of the required pieces (SRS, already had VS.NET
2005 installed, BI tools). But the BI tools (e.g. Report Designer) don't
appear on a menu anywhere, and the desired project type for reports doesn't
appear in VS.NET.
What might I have done wrong?

Nope, VS.NET 2005 was installed first. I have tried installing SQL Server

report designer when really they were dealing with the new controls (which
also allow designing reports). You wouldn't believe how many times people
have not installed from the SQL Server media the client BI tools. That is
why I am making sure.
I had exactly what you are talking about happen but it appeared when I
re-installed. Have you tried removing (not just re-installing) but first
removing the BI tools and then re-installing.

Yes, uninstalling my whole SQL Server installation and then re-installing
it fixed it - I now have the Business Intelligence projects.

Can't find Report Builder

I've installed SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition along with Visual Studio 2005. The SQL management consol indicates that Reporting Services is running, but I can't seem to find the Report Builder for the life of me. Is it integrated into Visual Studio somewhere?Report Builder is a ClickOnce app that is installed and run from the web. If you go to the web interface for SSRS you should see a button towards the top of the web page that will launch Report Builder.sql

Evaluation Edition. I am trying to wrtie a custom rendering service.
But to implement the
IRenderingExtension interface i need to reference
Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportRendering assembly. I am unable to
find it any of the installed directories. Can you please tell me how
to go about this?

I don't think such a file exists.
You have specific dlls for rendering extensiosn for example :
Microsoft.reportingservices.excelrendering,
Microsoft.reportingservices.csvrendering.
You don't have a dll for a report rendering. Reports are rendered through
rendering extensions (excel, pdf, csv, etc...

The assembly for the type is actually

can't find maintenance plan wizard in MSS2005

I use sql server 2005 standard edition, sp1 installed on win2003server.
I can't find the maintenance plan wizard in the object explorer in the
management-studio.
In documentation I found out, that the user connection must be done via
windows authentication and you have to
be a role-member of sysadmin (what does this mean exactly?).
Furthermore databases must have a compatibility of 80 (MSS2000) or
higher.
I met all conditions, but I still can't use the wizard.
Any ideas how to make the wizard 'visible' or is there a command line
statement to call it?

Only under the subitem Legacy there is a item 'Database Maintenance
Plans'.

You did what I did - didn't install SQL Server Integration Services. The
Maintenance Plan Wizard (and the interface to plans from SMSS) is part of
SSIS. Install SSIS from the SQL Server CD and you should get it working.

You did what I did - didn't install SQL Server Integration Services. The

Cant find error

I am developing a new report in VS 2005 with Reporting Services 2005
installed. I go to preview the report, and I get this:
"The definition of report blah is invalid. An internal error occurred on
the report server. See the error log for more details."
I have been looking everywhere for these error logs, and cant seem to find
one. I have checked my local event viewer and program files\mssql.3\logs, as
well as the remote Sql Server's event logs, rs logs, etc.
All the docs on Google point me to where the web server keeps their logs at
, but I am just tryign to preview a dev version locally.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In general, this is a very vague error. If you can remember the last
thing you changed before you got the error, that's the first place to
start. Also, depending on the number of SQL Services you have
installed (i.e., SSRS, SSIS, SSAS), it could be located in a different
MSSQL. directory. On my local machine, the SSRS logs are located in
the following location:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\Reporting Services
\LogFiles

Can't Find ConfigEdit

I installed the ConfigEdit XML editor mentioned in Kirk Haselden's great Integration Services book. But I can't use it unless I can find it! It's nowhere to be found in the Start menu or BIDS or right-click menus or inside projects. The book assumes you know where to go to open the editor. I'll be the first to eat crow if it's somehwere obvious. ConfigEdit installs to %ProgramFiles%\SSIS\Package Configurations Editor. I wouldn't call that obvious.|||

The setup executable prompted me for the location to save it to... So, yes, it is obvious.

It's possible I was surrounded by distractions at the time or I may have installed it and didn't have time to try it right away. Kirk, if you wrote merely the best SSIS book out there (IMHO) in your spare time then I'm even more amazed. I'll be one of the first in line (or online) if you ever do a 2nd Edition. That's because I use this book a lot and would always want the latest version--something I can't say for most of the tech manuals on my shelf.

ConfigEdit is just what the doctor ordered when using XML package configurations. Without it I'd be stuck using a text editor right now. Yuk. It would be nice to have such a utility built in to SSIS...

I can't see any SQL Management tools after installed SQL 2005. How can I see

XP SP2.
I am trying to work through the online tutorial. I am on

I downloaded the AdventureWorksDB.msi and installed it. The files
AdventureWorks_Data and AdventureWorks_Log are in my C:\Program
File\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data directory.
I am now trying to register the AdventureWorks server. Everything looks as
described in the tutorial until I get to the Connection Properties in Step 5.
There are no options for me to select. There are no databases other than
the initial system databases (no User Databases) when I try to browse.
Did I do something wrong? How do I locate the database so I can register it?Ensure you attached the AdventureWorks database to your SQL Server instance
which you choose in the New Server Registration window as the Server Name
editbox (e.g. EKREM-PC\test2)
If the AdventureWorks database is attached to your SQL Server instance and
if you type this SQL Server instance' s name in the Server Name editbox in
the New Server Registration, then you should be seeing the AdventureWorks
database in the combobox in Connection Properties tab in the New Server
Registration window.
