Can't find Report Designer

I think I've installed all of the required pieces (SRS, already had VS.NET
2005 installed, BI tools). But the BI tools (e.g. Report Designer) don't
appear on a menu anywhere, and the desired project type for reports doesn't
appear in VS.NET.
What might I have done wrong?

integrated (that happened to me). Reinstall Report Designer from the SQL
Server 2005 media.
Note that RS 2005 comes with a version of VS so you did not have to have VS
2005 (this is different than the case with RS 2000).

Nope, VS.NET 2005 was installed first. I have tried installing SQL Server

The only thing I see there that looks relevant is
Microsoft.ReportDesigner.dll.
I can also clarify that while I don't see the project types when I go to
add a new Project to the solution (which the installer suggested I should I
have) I did discover that under adding a new Item to a project, I do have
Report, and it is indeed an SRS Report that it creates.

report designer when really they were dealing with the new controls (which
also allow designing reports). You wouldn't believe how many times people
have not installed from the SQL Server media the client BI tools. That is
why I am making sure.
I had exactly what you are talking about happen but it appeared when I
re-installed. Have you tried removing (not just re-installing) but first
removing the BI tools and then re-installing.

Yes, uninstalling my whole SQL Server installation and then re-installing
it fixed it - I now have the Business Intelligence projects.

Can't find Business Intelligence Projects

I am learning Reporting Servcies. I installed Visual
Studio.NET 2003 and can't find 'Business Intelligence
Projects' when I click on 'New Project'. Can someone
please help?After installing VS you have to install RS. Consider RS to be an add in to
VS.

Your syntax looks fine to me, but I'm not a VB.NET expert. Make sure your datatypes for the parameters match the stored procedure exactly. You might try asking this question on the VB forums, since it doesn't seem to be related to SSIS.

Cant drill through from one report to another with report viewer

Hello all,

this is my first post to asp.net!

I am having a problem getting a drill through to work in the web report viewer. In report1 i have a table with groups and on the key field i want to drill down through i right click >properties> navigation and select jump to report. From there I select the predesigned report2 from the list and add the appropriate parameters.

It works fine when i test it in the dev enviroment and when i deploy it to the report server it works fine there. but when I debug and run it through the website itself and go to the report then click on the hyperlink it goes to a "page cannot be displayed' page.

I have been working on this for 2 days googling the heck out of it and testing several scenarios, but to no avail. I'm sure its something stupidly simple.

has anyone else had this problem?

Second, you can have a try to open the target report directly on the website.

Thanks for the response. I did make sure that the drill through report is in the right place and it didnt work on the live site either.

I did get around the problem though. I created an fresh new aspx page and dropped a fresh report viewer on it and tried it again and it works fine now. I did a comparison of the two pages' code and couldnt find anything obvious that could have caused it. It does work fine now.

the only other thing was to make sure that the page_load has an if not ispostback on it so that it would refresh and drilldown properly.

* Breakpoints are not hit in stored procs either... they become question
marks when I run and the tooltip text says "The breakpoint will not
currently be hit. Unable to bind SQL breakpoint at this time. Object
containing the breakpoint not loaded."
I have followed ALL these instructions :
* I have granted myself EXEC permissions on sp_sdidebug -- GRANT EXEC
on master..sp_sdidebug to [MYDOMAIN\ME]
* I have run -- exec sp_sdidebug 'legacy on'
* Sqlle.dll and sqldbreg2.exe exist on your debugging workstation. The
former library is the SQL language engine for the debugger.
* Sqldbg.dll exists on both the database server and the debugging
work-station. This library is the SQL debugging proxy.
* Mssdi98.dll exists in the \binn subfolder of every SQL Server instance
on the database server.
* If you're running the full version of SQL Server
* My domain account has permission to the master database itself.
* I re- execute sp_sdidebug 'legacy on' every time I reboot SQL Server.
* I turned on SQL debugging for every project in my VS solution -
* Connection pooling is disabled.
Any help?i usually debug sp's using query analyzer. i right click the stored
procedure in the debug manager and chose debug. u can even pass paramaters
to it

The first thing to do is to make sure that the account you are using can
execute the stored procedure indicated in the error message:
GRANT EXECUTE ON sp_sdidebug TO <your user account goes here>

Cant Create MSDE Database using ASP.NET Matrix

Hi i am having problems creating a new MSDE database when using the
ASP.NET Web Matrix to create it.
It says to click on New Connection, select SQL Sever Authentication,
add in the username and password and then click create new database.
I get an error though saying
Unable to connect to database server
SQL Server does not exist or access denied

I removed and then reinstalled the MSDE following the link you gave me,
then set it up following their stages.
I can create a database through the cmd.exe but still having the
problems with ASP.Net Matrix.
Going to remove and reinstall the .net matrix and see if that works.

matrix and the MSDE off my computer. then reinstalled everything again.
the version of .net web matrix i had seemed to be out of date so maybe

I have a very small project written in VB.Net 2005 using the SQL Server 2005 SSiS DTSx package.

I took a SQL Server 2000 dts package and using the SQL Server 3005 legacy tools migrated it so I could still use the package withing SQL 2005 until I can build one using BI/SSIS.

Anyway,I added the reference Microsoft.SqlServer.ManagedDTS so I could then use the Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime so I can execute the commands:

Dim oApp As New Application
Dim oPkg As New Package
oPkg = oApp.LoadPackage(g_DTSx_Directory & "AOC copy Generic1 CSV to AOC_verify_file_1.dtsx", Nothing)
Dim oResults As DTSExecResult
oResults = oPkg.Execute

Ok. That works fine. Executes without a hitch. So now I try and create a setup project for this and I use the setup wizard.

During the creation of the setup project I get a message that states:
The following files may have dependencies that cannot be determined automatically. Please confirm that all dependencies have been added to the project.
C:\windows\system32\msxml6.dll

OK. The dll is part of the reference I mentioned above and I have no idea what other dependencies it may have.

How do I find this out?

Has anyone else created a project like this and experenced the same?

I am on a clean build running WinXP Pro with SP2 - VS2005 with SP1 and the SQL Server 2005 tools.

I'm writing some VB.net 2005 windows applications which connect to various tables within SQL Server 2005.

If my programs are running from C drive, I have no problems connecting to my database.

but if i run my exe file from a network drive, then the SQL server doesnt recognise the user's pc, and wont allow my program to access any data.

Can anyone help me with this problem?

|||I guess you are receiving exception due to security restrictions, right ? This is caused by the CAS defined for network locations making it not possible to use all applications / assemblies from network ressources.

Cant connect to SQL server at work from home project

HI All,

i have copied a project from work i am working on and have created the same project at home in visual studio.net - everything is the same as it is at my work - for some reason though i cannot connect to the servers from my home project

can anyone help me with this - i get the message "SQL Server does not exist or access denied"

my web config has exactly the same set up with a key in appSettings as

<add key="My_Connection" value="User ID=myID;Password=myPassword;Initial Catalog=myCatalog;Data Source=xx.xx.xx.xx" />

can anyone tell me why i would not be able to even see my work database from home?

GilesbAre you trying to point to the databases that are at work or new ones that you have created at home?

If they are at home have you checked to ensure that all the correct logins have been recreated?

If you are pointing to databases at work then it is likely that you can't access from outside of the work network.|||Few things u need to check.
1) Is there a firewall protecting your "Work" LAN? If yes, ask your system administrator to open the SQL port in your firewall and be sure to ask your system administrator to set a rules to restrict for your IP address or connecting by VPN.
2) You ve to configure your connection through Client utility. Specify a server name and External network IP address. That will direct your application to call external IP address.|||Sounds like someone where you work might actually know what they're doing. You shouldn't be able to connect unless connected by VPN. If you can, then you have bigger problems then the fact you copied your work project to a home computer. If you have permissions to work from home, have the network admins grant you remote user access and set you up to use the VPN. If not, either work more hours at work, or explain to your bosses why you can't work from home.|||Thanks for your help guys but i dont think i would need a VPN to merely access a database just to "login" as it were - basically i have an asp.net project that runs fine when testing at work - servers are at work, but when i run it from home i cant get a connection - should be just like running the site from home and hooking in to the database right ?

If your home computer were part of the work network then yes, it would be exactly the same but it is not. If you VPN in to the work network then yes, you would be part of the same network.

To put a sql server onto your network with open ports to the real world is asking for trouble (yeah, there are probably ways of making sure it is mostly secure, but only mostly...). I'd estimate 90% of SQL Servers are safely hidden behind firewalls to prevent anything other then the machines on the internal network connecting to it.

I can't connect to sql server 2005 from my asp.net web page. I seem to be able to connect to it when i run the application from within visual studio but i can't connect to it when i run the application from IIS.

I am new to sql server 2005 express so please bear with me.

The error message i get is:

Cannot open database "Vets" requested by the login. The login failed.
Login failed for user 'OSCAR2K4\ASPNET'.

I don't know where this user OSCAR2K4\ASPNET came from but i looked in sql server 2005 and there he is. In the left hand pane I went to Security and then logins and found oscar2k4\asp.net there. I went to the properties for this user and went to User Mappings. There was no tick next to my Vets database so I added one and ran the application from IIS. I also added the user to every single role in the vets database (including dbowner). I also went into the vets database itself and found the oscar/aspnet user and made sure he was added to every role.

I ran the application again. This time i got a lots of different errors. If the page was trying to run a select procedure I got the error user does not have select permission. If the page was running an SP i got the error or user does not execute permission

I have never had this problem before so I don't understand.

Where did this user come from? Was he created automatically when i configured my database for membership and roles? How do i set up this user so he can access the databsae from IIS.

The only way I could get the application to run from IIS was to go to Security - Logins for sql server and add the oscar2k4\asp.net user to the sysadmin role.

I find this very strange. Naturally i don't want to leave oscar2k4 in sysadmin.

Please help :) I can't upload my website until i fix this

Cant connect to sql server 2000 from asp.net

I installed sql server 2000 on a remote server. I can connect toit from the client with query analyzer, but I cannot connect to it fromASP.NET. I'm using Sql authentication, and the account has everypermission under the sun. I can also connect to it from theserver explorer in visual studio.net. I turned off thefirewall. I tried connecting with the same asp.net code from adifferent computer and still no luck. I've triple-double-checkedthe connectionstring. It's the same credentials I'm using forquery analyzer and server explorer, which both work fine. Anytroubleshooting tips would be GREATLY appreciated.

I hadinstalled 1.1 initially, but someone installed commerce server 2002 andit installed .net 1.0 on top of that, which messed everything up. I reinstalled windows 2003 and then reinstalled .net 1.1, and all isgood.

Which version of SQL Server 2005 are you using and are you connecting from
the same computer or a different computer? For the developer or evaluation
editions of SQL Server 2005 you must use the Surface Area Configuration tool
to enable TCP connections from another computer. If SQL Server is installed
on Windows XP Professional SP2, you may need to configure the firewall as
well.

Cant connect to SQL Server

I've installed successfuly (?) both Sql Server 2000 and VS.NET 2002 many times, but now I'm not being able to connect to Sql Server from VS.NET by any means (i.e. Server Explorer, SqlDataAdpters, etc.).

Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer work perfectly.

The error messages I'm getting are the following:

1.
devenv.exe - Unable to Locate Component
This application has failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found. Re-installing
the application may fix this problem.

2.
Server Explorer
Unable to add data connection.
Some program files are not properly registered on your machine. Rereun the setup program.

After getting this, I've tried to re install everything, even the OS from scratch, but cannot get a successful connection at all. I've tried everything.

Someone please tell me he or she has worked this out...

Thanks will be very much appreciated.Can you locate msvcr71.dll under the v1.1 install directory? If yes can you try adding the path to the install folder to the "PATH" variable and try opening devenv again. If you don't find the assembly you should probably try and repair vs.net.

Cant connect to SQL server

I have a SQL server hosting version 2005 and support ASP.net 2.0. Evrerything works just fine with other databases. However when I use Web Configure supported in Visual Studion 2005 to define the membership and user control and upload all files and folders to the server. It never works. I says can not connect to SQL server. The help guy from my hosting says it does not support SQL express and they do not support that.

By default the database connection string is configured by SQL express and I do not know how to change it.

Not all, it is said that just upload everything to the server and that's all but it is not that. To work with database I had to use SQL server 2005 to upload the database by using import wizard and import tables into the database folder in my server. Do I need to do them same with membership and role database? I tried but it still says error .

I am just beginer so need help form you, the masters.

Cant Connect to Sql Server

Warning extreme newbie.

I am trying to follow a .Net Walk Thru that connects to Sql Server. The SqlConnection, SqlDataAdapter, and DataSet all appear to be working properly, but when the web page opens I get a 'Sql Server Does Not Exist or Access Denied.'

Any ideas would be greatly apprieciated.

Is the connection string correct (i.e. username, password, server address, etc.) and do you have the correct permissions to access the database?

Connection Strings: I have used the one generated with the SqlConnection Object and I have modified it many different ways. Integrated Security on & off, By Server name/IP Address. Using a port number & using TCIP/IP. I have also tried my connecting to my local computer and the office server.

Database: I definitely have rights to the database.

Could the problem be how it is connecting, some sort of port disconnect? Could something be overriding my connection string?

Cant connect to remote SQL Server from my ASP.NET 2.0

I’m going nuts and need some help with my ASP.NET 2.0 application which has trouble talking to a remote SQL Server 2000. First, before I describe my problem let me say that everything works perfectly on my XP development workstation when I point to the local SQL Server database. Screens load fine, saves and edits all work perfectly.

Problem is when I connecting to SQL Server on a remote windows 2003 server I get

Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

Now, I’ve researched this error and have successfully made the following changes to the remote windows 2003 server where the database resides:

1) Added logins for “ASPNET”, “NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE”, and “IIS_WPG”. The reason I added NT AUTHORITY is because we plan on deploying this web site to the same windows 2003 server and I understand that IIS6 (on this server) has ASP.NET running as NT AUTHORITY acct.

2) For all the logins above I’ve added them as users to the database and given dbo role.

I still get same login for user null error when attempting to connect from my XP workstation.

Can anyone help?

You need to authenticate against the remote SQL server. Do that in your connectionstrong.

Thanks, I'm still getting error. I also want to state I am using windows authentication for this web application, and my understanding is ASP.NET is running as NT AUTHORITY (if windows 2003 and IIS 6) or ASPNET(if XP ) is this a correct assumption?My web.config is set to windows authentication.

I looked at connectionstrings.com as you suggested. This is the connection stringI auto created (it seems very consistent w/ examples on connectionstrings.com) using VisualStudio by dragging a table onto a form from the remote server "TESTSERVER" and using the Configure Data Source dialog which creates the connection string automatically. The SQL Database on TESTSERVER is set to mixed mode for both SQL and Windows authentication. Here is the string, do you see any issues?

Data Source=TESTSERVER;Initial Catalog=CompanyDB1;Integrated Security=True.

I get the same error :Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

Do you have any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Why is user null? Should the user be ASPNET or NT AUTHORITY coming from my XP based web server?

|||Well, using windows authentication for your winxp login is not working. Try to create a user/pass for your database on the remote server|||check the permission of your database|||NT AUTHORITY has dbo rights in the database. Is this the permission you are referring to?
