can't get in anymore

I installed SQL 2005 on a new machine last week. Created a database using
scripts. Worked fine for a few days.
Yesterday, I attached a database that had been created on another machine,
with SQL 2000. Seemed to work fine. I closed SQL Server to work on something
else, then opened it back up. It won't let me in now. It says that it
doesn't allow remote connections, even though I am doing it from the same
machine that it resides on.
Text of the message is below the line at the bottom of this.
I tried changing the way I log in, including Windows Authentication, SQL
Server authentication, using my network name, and then using the user name I
created just for this thing when I installed SQL Server. I alwasy get the
same message. I also tried connecting remotely from another machine.
I was able to use this same machine to connect to another SQL Server
instance on the network, so it's apparent that the installation of SQL
Server isn't messed up.
I know that I will probably get asked about an admin username and password,
but I don't know what mine is. I tried sa with no password, but it didn't
work.
This is really causing some problems and I have something due at noon today.
Any help appreciated.
If I uninstalled SQL Server and re-install, will that let me in then?

Cant get Access Database Synchronizer set up on client machine

I have created a PPC application that uses ADS to synchronize my sqlce db with a desktop MS Access database. It works fine on my computers, but my client cant get it to work on his. Here is the situation.

His "Computer Name" as it's stated in his 'My Computer' properties is "PAVSGP024FE.NWFSC.NOAA.GOV"

However his Access.MDW File is located in the directory "C:\Documents and Settings\Joe Nobody\Application Data\Microsoft\Access\System.MDW".

There is no directory called "C:\Documents and Settings\PAVSGP024FE.NWFSC.NOAA.GOV\Application Data\Microsoft\Access\System.MDW".

His current config.xml file looks like this.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<SystemNode>
<AccessDB>C:\Program Files\NOAA Release Logger\NOAA_ReleaseLogger.mdb</AccessDB>
<DeviceDB>\Program Files\NOAA Release Logger\NOAA_ReleaseLogger.sdf</DeviceDB>
<Login>Joe Nobody</Login>
<URL>http://Joe Nobody:1024/</URL>
<WinDir>C:\</WinDir>
</SystemNode>

He has tried adding port 1024 as an exception for his firewall settings, has installed Access Database Synchronizer on his computer, and I have also tried using the "long" computer name as the url setting in the config file. (i.e. <URL>http://PAVSGP024FE.NWFSC.NOAA.GOV:1024/</URL> but this throws the error

"The HTTP request failed due to incorrect format or content. Try restarting the IIS server.[]"

I dont know what else to try! Anybody have any suggestions?

I have had the same problems when I first installed. THen for some reason things started working. Now a few weeks later, when I get back to trying it, no work anymore. I suggest you read the readme.doc that comes with it. THere are some things to check there. Make sure IIS is running. THen you add a 1024 port if you have the firewall enabled. I also had some success when I manually copied the .cab file to the device, then installed that way. I don't think I have ever got it to work just downloading the sample project.

Another thing to verify is that your internet connection is going from device to desktop. Open IE and try to open http://<computer>:1024/. Presently, I am unable to do this so I think something is wrong on my Desktop platform. I am going to try another platform that used to work.

|||

Tried to run the synchronizer on the other platform that it used to work on also. Now that one is not working either. I went through all the steps I know of to get it working, no luck. I cannot get the IE to link up to the web service either which I am thinking must be the main problem.

I am sorry to say, I need to give up trying to get it to work now.

|||

Wanted to check, have you got it running now.

Please note: You do not IIS to run ADS applications. Stop the IIS and try.

The path of the .msw file should be C:\Documents and Settings\"User Name"\Application Data\Microsoft\Access\System.MDW.

So if his user name on the computer is "Joe Nobody" then specify the path as "C:\Documents and Settings\"User Name"\Application Data\Microsoft\Access\System.MDW" as indicated in your post.

|||

We did finally get this working but, only because we gave up installing it on this particular computer. His computer was part of a business network and something about it would not allow this to work. Once he installed everything on a non-network computer everything worked as it should. So, unfortunately, we never did actually get to the root of this particular problem.

CAN'T FULLY UNINSTALL SQL SERVER 2005 STANDARD

We have a Windows Server 2003 SP1 machine with two hard drives. I
installed MS SQL Server 2005 without paying attantion to where it
installed to. The c: drive is very small while d: is large. SQL
installed on c:. Apparentely, log files were growing and filled up all
the space on c:. I couldn't access SQL Server and decided uninstall it.
I went ahead and uninstall all components via add/remove programs.
After that I noticed all sql folders on c: are present, all services
are running and I was able to open Management Studio. At the same time
no SQL products are listed in add/remove. I need to fully uninstall it.
I tried command prompt pointing to the setup.exe file (where I copied
disks since it is a remote server) and failed.
Please, help!!!

Can't find server

Hello
I installed the old MSDE 2000 (not release a) on a Windows XP Pro machine. I
manage the DB with the MSDE Manager from Vale Software. On the machine it
self, it works fine. I can select the DB and connect as 'sa' with password.
But on every other machine in the network, I can't connect to the DB. I can
ping to the server, that's no problem. I can chose the server in MSDE
Manager (and other DB-Tools like 'Aqua Data Studio' and 'DBVisualizer') but
I always get an error message like 'Cannot find server'. On the XP machine
there is no firewall running and -of course- the SQL-Server task is started.
The port 1433 isn't blocked.
Have enyone an idea why I can connect the DB on the machine it self but not
from every other machine in the network?
Thanks a lot
Dani
It's possible that the server does not have the network connectivity library
enabled.
i don't know how re-enable it in MSDE after MSDE is already installed.
Although i know it can be done, i read it a few days ago in the MSDE2000A
readme.
If it were SQL server, i'd say use the "Server Network Utility" (i think
it's called that). In that you can enable/disable tcpip, netbios,
multiprotocol, flatulance, etc.

Can't expand localhost icon...

Hi all,
Something that should have been straightforward turned out to be rather
problematic. Thankfully this is only a test machine. SQL Server 2000 Dev
Edition on XP Pro.
I detached a [BLAH] database file with Enterprise Manager, deleted the
corresponding BLAH.MDF/.LDF files, copied newer versions of those files from
another machine where the old files used to be, then was going to reattach
as usual with the following sequence:
Reload SQL Server Enterprise Manager
Expand Microsoft SQL Servers
Expand SQL Server Group
Try to expand (local)
At this point I got the following:
"Unable to connect to server localhost: Server: Msg 4064, Level 16, State 1
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open user
default
database. Login failed."
WTF? I didn't delete any other file, or detach any other database...I'm
ruling out any problem with the newer .MDF/.LDF files, because I'm not even
getting to the point where I can even try to reattach.
Ideas?Argh...never mind...I just found Q307864. No clue why Google failed to
return it the first time around (*before* I posted my original question)...
I still have no idea though why the problem started...|||Homer,
That error message is normal.Iam assuming that the login uses the same
database that you detached, as the default one. While you were connecting to
the server through EM, the login failed since the default database was not
online.
Use master as default database to avoid situations like this.

It's very possible this is the case--I can't remember...however I use this
particular database almost exclusively on this test machine, so I can see
how I might have changed the default at some point...|||Hi Homer,
I am reviewing your post now. I want to know that after you change the
default database of all users to MASTER, is the problem resolved? Please
feel free to let us know that if you still have any problem. We are glad to
help.
Thanks.

"Unable to connect to server localhost: Server: Msg 4064, Level 16, State 1
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open user default
database. Login failed."
WTF? I didn't delete any other file, or detach any other database...I'm
ruling out any problem with the newer .MDF/.LDF files, because I'm not even
getting to the point where I can even try to reattach.
Ideas?
Argh...never mind...I just found Q307864. No clue why Google failed to
return it the first time around (*before* I posted my original question)...
I still have no idea though why the problem started...
|||Homer,
That error message is normal.Iam assuming that the login uses the same
database that you detached, as the default one. While you were connecting to
the server through EM, the login failed since the default database was not
online.
Use master as default database to avoid situations like this.

Can't deploy from local machine

Can anyone help me. I work in a workgroup environment as opposed to domain
controlled. The minute I do anything with reporting services or analysis
services that is between machines I get problems.
I can't deploy to SSAS or SSRS from my machine unless I log into my machine
with a username and account that is the same as the machine being deployed
to. How do I tell BIDS what credentials to use.
Can anyone give me an overview of how credentials are passed in a non domain
environment.On Sep 25, 2:47 pm, "Fresno Bob" <nos...@.nospam.com> wrote:

This article is off topic; however, gives a general explanation
similar to your scenario. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms252507(VS.80).aspx
It seems that this is more of an OS security level/authentication
issue. As far as I know, you may not be able to control the BIDS
credentials. At a Report Server level, you should be able to change
credentials once the report is deployed in the Report Mgr. You might
try looking in the ReportProjectName.rptproj.user file to see if you
can possibly modify something there. Sorry that I could not be of
greater assistance.
Regards,
Enrique Martinez
Sr. Software Consultant|||SSAS Requires Windows Authentication to work and does not accept SQL
Authentication. If you are in a workgroup the only way to get your scenario
to work is to create identical local accounts on both machines. When I say
identical I mean has the same name and password. Since you are not in a
domain there isn't a way for the remote server to validate your credentials
and will therefore always get a user of "null".

Can't connect to the sql server

I have machine A hosting SQL Server XXX, and B tries to access XXX. XXX
use mixed authentication mode. A and B are in the same LAN and
workgroup.
B use Sql Server username and passoword to access the XXX sql server.
In ADO.Net and Visual Studio .Net, if I first register the Server A on
Visual Studio .Net IDE, then I can connect to XXX by the pre-set sql
server username and password, otherwise it failed.
Or, if I first connect to Server A by visiting network connections to
give A's windows username and password, then I can connect to XXX by
the pre-set sql server username and password.
However, if I don't first gain access A, then I can't connect XXX by
the pre-set sql server username and password.
What's the problem here?
Thanks; Can you describe your installation more fully? Which edition of SQL
Server 2005 (I assume it's SQL Server 2005) are you using? Which CTP?
Thanks

Can't connect to SS2005

Hello,
I had SS2K running on my local machine (everything worked). Then I
installed SS2005 and was able to connect the server running locally. Once I
uninstalled SQL Server 2000, I was unable to connect. Even if I try to
create a new registration, I get the error that I can't connect to the
server. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Hello,
It seems issues in client tools. You may want to check "sql server browser"
service is started. Also, please remove/reinstall SQL tools via Add/Remove
programs to test the situation.

It seems there are permission issues for admin users on this machine,
please try the following command to reset permission on this machine to

Can't connect to SQL Server 2005 Express from another machine

I know there have been many posts made on this subject; however, despite the resources available, I have not been able to get this to work! I've spent time working on this here and there over the last couple of months only resulting in frustration. I am finally posting to solicit help for my situation to figure out what is wrong with my SQL Server or firewall configuration.

Two machines connected to a router, one wireless, one wired. Both have SQL Server Express and the Management Studio tools installed. From either machine I can connect to its local SQL Server Express instance.

I have enabled Shared Memory, Named Pipes, TCP/IP, and VIA in the SQL Server Configuration Manager. (BTW what is VIA?)

I have added sqlsrvr.exe and sqlbrowser.exe to my Windows Firewall exceptions. I have tried disabling Windows Firewall. One of the machines is configured as DMZ in the router configuration.

Please, someone offer up some brilliant diagnostic steps I am missing to expose what is wrong in my setup and make this work... Thank you!

BTW, here is the error message. You can see why, in light of what I mentioned above, this error message is infuriating to me by now... !

Cannot connect to \\remotemachine\sqlexpress.

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. Can you connect to the system by configuring an ODBC Connection from the ODBC Manager in the control panel. Doing this will help to verify where the problem is... if it goes through there is a problem in the way that you app is connecting to the database.

I see that you are connecting by names pipes... when trying the connection try by using tcpip to connect.

|||

Thanks for the response. I get the same results from the ODBC Manager as I do from the Management Studio, command line, or from an application. Can't connect, same error message.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this in my original post, but even when I try to connect to the local SQL Server instance using it's IP address 192.168.0.98 instead of 127.0.0.1... I get the error message above. Hope this sparks some ideas out there. Thanks!

The surface area configuration shows that it is configured for local and remote connections using both TCP/IP and named pipes. Thanks though. I am baffled.

|||

Maybe this has something to do with it?

Under SQL Server Configuration Manager TCP/IP Properties, it shows IP1, IP2, IP3 and IPAll. IP3 is an old IP address from when the machine was configured to use DHCP (can this entry be deleted somehow?). IP2 is 127.0.0.1, which I can connect on. IP1 is 192.168.0.98 which I want to connect with. IP1's "Active" property seems to keep getting set to "No", even after I set it to "Yes" and restart SQL Server. What do you think about this?

|||

I connected. I am an idiot.

Once I tried with the correct freakin' IP address AND explicitly with the port, I can connect.

It's 192.168.1.98 not 192.168.0.98. That entry in the TCP/IP Properties (which was 0) was faking me out.

Woohoo! :)

Sorry folks. Thanks for the responses.

Cant connect to SQL server 2000.....

I have SQL server 2000 installed on machine A and when I try to connect using machine B, I get the error message:

A connection could not be established to "servername"

Reson: Timeout expired.

I have been able to connect to the machine in the past and this morning, the server was rebooted and now I can't connect. I can see the server using enterprise manager and I can start and stop machine A from B, but I just can't connect. Any ideas?

ThanksLots of places to start checking, but try the SQL Server Error logs first. Look for the following entries:

2006-01-26 11:09:34.59 server Using 'SSNETLIB.DLL' version '8.0.2039'.
...
2006-01-26 11:09:34.62 server SQL server listening on xx.xx.xx.xx: 1433.
2006-01-26 11:09:34.62 server SQL server listening on 127.0.0.1: 1433.
2006-01-26 11:09:34.71 spid3 Server name is 'MYSERVER'.
...
2006-01-26 11:09:35.62 server SQL server listening on TCP, Shared Memory, Named Pipes.
2006-01-26 11:09:35.73 server SQL Server is ready for client connections

If something is amiss here, google the error message and start from there.

Next try telnetting to your server's ip address on port 1433 (or whatever port SQL says it's listening on). From a command window, type telnet MyServer 1433. The command window should blink, go entirely black and nothing else. If you get a response like 'cannot connect', then there are network issues (or the SQL Server service is not started.

Try starting there...

Can't connect to SQL Server (developer edition) from another PC?

I've installed SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition on a Windows XP Pro
SP2 machine. It's installed without any problems.
When I try to connect to it from another XP SP2 machine (by creating
an ODBC data source) I get a Login error:
[ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen(Connect()).
Connection failed: SQLState: 08001 SQL Server Error: 17
SQL Server does not exist or access denied
I can ping the server fine from the other machine, and I've tried the
standard "sa" user/pw as welll as my own logins.
The server is configured for mixed authentication (Windows/SQL
Server).
Can anyone suggest what the problem might be?
TIA for any help
Ian
Are you running XP firewall on that machine? If so, turn it off and any
other firewall (Norton Internet Security, etc).

I've tried turning off XP firewall but it made no difference. I'm not
running Norton, but am using AVG anti-virus (free edition). No other
firewall/AV software installed.
